Colorado Voters Snubbing Party PicksStraw polls from Tuesday night’s caucuses revealed that Colorado Democrats and Republicans may not be following their parties’ preferred candidate choices in the manner the national parties would prefer. In the GOP Republican caucus, 40% of the vote in the governor’s race went to underdog Dan Maes, not Scott McInnis, whom the party publicly touted several months ago as the candidate uniting the GOP in Colorado. From these polls, it appears there is a large number in the state Republican Party who reject this united front. Similarly, over at the Democratic caucuses, the grassroots membership was telling their party elite the same thing. A little more than 50% chose Andrew Romanoff as their senatorial candidate over Senator Michael Bennet, who received 41% of the vote. Eight percent was undecided. Almost a month ago on February 18, Obama made a special trip to Denver to campaign for Bennet, a campaign stop that upset Romanoff supporters deeply. In response to his unprecedented support of a Colorado candidate prior to the primary, which was against party rules, local Democratic officials sent an open letter to the president and their national party expressing their displeasure with his involvement in local politics. |
